Theme 3: Gateway Access

Theme Leader: Dr. Terry Todd, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, McMaster University

Research in Theme 3 focuses on studying the impact of integrating multiple interfaces in wireless sensor networks. To date this is already happening in the cellular world as handset vendors readily include multiple air interfaces into their products, such as Bluetooth, WiFi, WiMax and 2G/3G. Complex interaction between applications and these air interfaces and networks will become much more common in the future as these networks support more sophisticated multimedia applications. The project will focus on many of the key technical challenges that designers of these types of networks will face. Hybrid sensor networking is the key to overcoming many of the scalability issues with sensor network based multimedia applications and this project will address many of the important associated technical issues.

Theme 3 Research Projects:
  • Hybrid WLAN/Sensor Network Integration: Project Leader Dr. Sherman Shen, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Waterloo
  • Outdoor Infrastructure for Hybrid Sensor Networks: Project Leader Dr. Terry Todd and Dr. Polychronis Koutsalis, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, McMaster University
